Enhancing Wastewater Risk Management at Small Municipalities

Management of wastewater risks by municipalities is essential for securing human health and long term sustainability of natural resources. Emanti, in conjunction with SALGA, has recently supported two municipalities (Bergrivier and Cape Agulhas) within the Western Cape with the development of Wastewater Risk Abatement Plans using RiskQ web-based tools. This initiative began in June and is due for closure in December. The objective of this project is to equip the aforementioned municipal wastewater management professionals with the necessary skills to clearly define control points and risk management procedures for effective operation and maintenance of their wastewater treatment plants. The approach also aimed at organising and mobilising the efforts of both the municipal manager and financial services to achieve a clear on the ground impact.

Effective implementation of these W2RAPs and its supporting programmes can be used as stepping stone to fulfil the Green Drop Certification criteria and ensure sustainable wastewater service delivery.
